The Certified Secretaries’ profession plays a pivotal role in promoting the practice of good governance and leadership in both private and public sectors. Members of the Institute of Certified Public Secretaries of Kenya (ICPSK) are generally referred to as Certified Secretaries and the designatory letters “CS.” are used before their names. The designation “CS” is protected at the Kenya Industrial Property Institute (KIPI). However, the title may vary depending with the type of organization one is working for and the position they occupy in such organization.  Some of the titles applicable include Certified Secretary, Company Secretary, Corporation Secretary and Board Secretary. Certified Secretaries are found in all sectors where they carry out key roles in management, leadership and promotion of good governance. To become a CS, one has to be a member of the Institute after possessing membership qualifications as prescribed under Section 20 of the Certified Public Secretaries Act, Cap 534 of the Laws of Kenya. Examinations for the Certified Secretaries’ qualification are administered by KASNEB and are designed to ensure that qualified persons acquire requisite knowledge in the areas of governance, leadership and management. Some of the job opportunities for Certified Secretaries include:
